Fire and Bomb Alerts
When the alarm bells sound, it should not be assumed that it is a scheduled fire drill; all personnel in the School must leave the building immediately by the designated routes.
- The assembly point for the Mathematics Building is outside the Physics building in front of the Vice Chancellors house.
- The assembly point for the Royal Fort Annex and House is outside the Physics building in front of the Vice Chancellors house.
- The assembly point for St Michaels House is in the Medical School car park.
- All members of staff must ensure that classes they are conducting at the time leave the building.
- All staff are responsible for seeing that their rooms and work areas are vacated immediately. On leaving a room close windows if practical, switch off lights but do not lock door.
- After an evacuation there must be no re-entry to the building until you are told it is safe.
In the event of a fire, the chief fire officer on the scene will be in charge of the building and will inform the safety officers and porters when the building is safe for re-entry. The people posted at the doors to the building are instructed not to let anyone enter whilst the building is being checked by the fire brigade or police, and their instructions not to enter are to be respected by all. If it is a drill, the safety officers will decide when the drill is over and will inform those stationed at the doors to that effect. The stopping of the alarm bells does not mean that it is safe to re-enter the building.
