Crime Trends

Accompanying local and national trends there has been, over the last few months, a slight increase in the level of crime affecting the University, particularly burglaries and thefts. This is a matter of great concern to University management and a number of measures, including an expanded use of access control and improved CCTV systems within buildings in the precinct are being actively progressed.

All staff and students should be aware of the important part they have to play in keeping crime to a minimum. We can all actually help to prevent crime and I would like to take this opportunity to pass on to staff some guidance, in the form of some simple reminders and tips, as recommended by our own Security Services:

  • NEVER leave personal possessions unattended. Take them with you or lock away out of sight.
  • BE CAREFUL with keys. Keep them in a secure place. Never label keys with your name and address or room number.
  • SECURE all vulnerable windows in your absence. An open window is an invitation to a thief who will take advantage.
  • NEVER assume that a stranger is authorised to be in the building. Check with someone in authority. "Can I help you?" will often deter the dishonest.
  • DON'T reveal access door codes or computer codes to anyone else or allow anyone to enter the building with you no matter how genuine they appear.
  • DON'T allow anyone to 'tailgate' behind you through a controlled access door.
  • DON'T assume everyone else is as honest as you are. Take care of your own property and that of your University.
