Seminars and Lectures
- Algebra and Geometry
- If it relates to algebra, or geometry, then we're interested.
- Analysis
- Covering a wide range of topics, including calculus of variations, partial differential equations, spectral theory and stochastic analysis.
- Bayesian Reading Club
- The Bayesian Reading Club is a (very informal) reading group of the Statistics group. We read a variety of papers that are usually loosely related to the Bayesian paradigm: some are more applied, others more theoretical, sometimes philosophical, sometimes algorithmic etc. It often takes more than one meeting to read through and discuss one paper. We meet roughly every fortnight in term time. Please see http://www.maths.bris.ac.uk/~maxvd/cake_club_www.html
- Category Theory
- An informal reading seminar aiming to understand the connections between category theory and high energy physics. We will be mainly following the classical Category Theory text by Mac Lane and the book by Bakalov and Kirillov on Tensor Categories and Modular Functors.
- Colloquium
- This is an occasional presentation of general interest, by a distinguished speaker, targeting a wide audience. Tea is served before the talks, wine and cheese afterwards.
- Combinatorics
- This is a seminar series for anyone with an interest in combinatorics. Tea will be served prior to scheduled seminars in the common room on level 4 of Howard House.
- Combinatorics Working Group
- A fortnightly informal meeting of to discuss interesting research problems, and work through interesting books or other literature. Subscribe to comb-wg@sympa.bristol.ac.uk mailing list for more information.
- Complexity Sciences Seminar
- Weekly seminars on complex systems theory and applications, organised by the Bristol Centre for Complexity Sciences.
- Distinguished Lecture Series
- An annual event, in collaboration with the Heilbronn Institute, in which a distinguished scholar is invited to give a series of three lectures and a colloquium.
- Environmental and Geophysical Flows
- An informal interdisciplinary lunchtime seminar focussed on modelling environmental phenomena.
- Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems
- The seminar will typically be on Thursdays at 3pm in the Howard House seminar room. Tea will be served in the Howard House common room after the seminar.
- Fluids and Materials Journal Club
- This is a seminar of the Fluids and Materials group in which postgraduate students present either an interesting paper, or their own research, to the whole group. We meet on Tuesdays at 4pm. Students can upload their talk titles to the google doc here: http://bit.ly/TC4eHt
- Graduate Seminar
- The Graduate Seminar for Mathematics in Business and Industry is a seminar series where we invite mathematicians working in industry to come explain their work to a graduate-level audience. This gives us the opportunity to learn about the way in which industry utilizes mathematical models and gives us an insight into research environments outside of university.
- Gravity currents in nature and industry
- Lectures on the theory of gravity currents (1530-1615), followed by seminar on recent applications (1620-1650)
- HFAKT Seminar
- Informal research meetings on homogeneous flows and their application in kinetic theory
- Hardy Fellowship Lecture
- The Hardy Fellowship was founded in 1967 in memory of G.H. Hardy in recognition of outstanding contribution to both mathematics and to the Society. The Hardy Fellowship is a lecture tour of the UK by a mathematician with a high reputation in research.
- Heilbronn
- Run jointly by the Number Theory Group and the Heilbronn Institute. Tea is served before the talk.
- Isaac Newton 20th Anniversary Lecture
- A distinguished lecturer currently a Visiting Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute will give an invited special lecture at this department.
- Linfoot
- The Linfoot seminar series is an informal number theory seminar for broadening the horizons of faculty, postdocs and graduate students.
- Logic and Set Theory Seminar
- A seminar for Logic and Set Theory. This meets to discuss matters and hear speakers in mathematical logic and set theory. (See also the Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics Seminar in the Philosophy department: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/philosophy/department/events/phs_seminars/phs_seminars.html.)
- Postgrad seminar: Mathematical Physics and beyond
- Seminar aimed at young researchers, everyone is welcome to attend and/or present something they think is interesting. The aim is to promote new connections in Mathematics and Physics.
- Probability Reading Group
- To take advantage of the arrival of Balint Toth in the department, we have decided to form a probability reading group. For the first term we have chosen the topic of the Central Limit Theorem for Markov processes.
- Probability and Statistics
- Held weekly. Aimed at anyone with an interest in probability and statistics. Each session will feature one or two talks, with odd weeks devoted to internal speakers and even weeks to external speakers. For announcements please send an email with "subscribe prob-stats-sem" in the text to sympa@sympa.bris.ac.uk.
- Pure Postgraduate Seminar
- An informal seminar aimed at postgraduate students with an interest in pure mathematics.
- Statistics
- Statistics and Probability seminars have been merged into a single series. Please see Probability and Statistics seminars.
