ABSTRACT
This talk will take you on a guided tour of vision through the animal kingdom, from familiar vertebrates, via insects, spiders, and giant squid to simple creatures such as worms and jellyfish. In different animals, eyes have evolved for serving a range of different tasks in nearly every habitat on earth, from sunlit deserts to the darkness of the deep sea. Some animals have eyes similar to ours, but other animals see the world through compound eyes or use even more exotic eye designs. Eyes range in size from only fractions of a millimetre to the size of a basketball, and all this has consequence for what their bearers will be able to see.
