Major grants for School of Mathematics

The School of Mathematics has been awarded three major grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to explore some of mathematics' most intriguing problems: the landscape L-functions (Profs. Brian Conrey and Jon Keating FRS), stratified shear flows (Prof. Rich Kerswell FRS), and statistical inference (Prof. Christophe Andrieu).

Royal Statistical Society honour for Sir John Kingman

Sir John Kingman, former Vice-Chancellor of the University and now Emeritus Professor in the School of Mathematics, has been awarded the Guy Medal in Gold, the top honour of the Royal Statistical Society. The RSS selected Sir John 'for his fundamental contributions to stochastic processes in four main areas: heavy traffic queueing theory; regenerative phenomena; subadditive ergodic theory; and mathematical population genetics'.

New research improves estimates of ash in volcanic clouds

The amount of ash released by Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano during April 2010 was significantly underestimated at the time of the eruption, according to a new study, led by Dr Mark Woodhouse and published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. This could have important consequences for airspace management during future eruptions.

Lynne Walling and Trevor Wooley have both been made Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). The Fellows of the AMS designation recognises members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilisation of mathematics.
