Postgraduate study
Prospective postgraduate students should also look at the Admissions section.
Postgraduate students due to start in October 2011 should look at the information here.
This section of the website is aimed at current postgraduate students.
As a postgraduate student, you are an integral part of the Department's research endeavours. Your participation is not only encouraged but also expected in the various scientific events taking place throughout the year. Seminars, group meetings, giving tutorials to undergraduates –all of these contribute to your education and skills development.
New MSc programme
The School of Mathematics is introducing a new MSc programme for students entering in 2011. During this 1-year course students will focus on an area at the forefront of research in Mathematics where they will be able to attend specialised lectures and perform their own research under the supervision of a member of staff. More information on this course can be found here.
Taught Courses
In addition to research seminars and an array of informal Graduate Lectures that are organised every year, there is a comprehensive range of introductory post-graduate courses. Bristol University has become a Taught Course Centre , in partnership with Oxford, Warwick, Imperial College and Bath, and also a Doctoral Training Centre in Complexity. Additionally, we now offer the new Master of Research (MRes) degree in Statistics , with 2/3 of the assessment based on taught units and 1/3 based on a dissertation.
Where to look for more information
You can find more information about progress reviews, regulations for postgraduate students, plus forms and handbooks, in the Blackboard online learning environment.
All staff and students are automatically entered to the Blackboard system. There is a "course" there called Math_Admin — this is a repository of documents of use to all staff and postgraduate students. In this site, there is a content area called "Postgraduate information", which contains:
- Handbooks
- Progress forms and procedures
- Information for submission and examination
- Useful links in the University
- Useful links outside of the University
If you cannot see the Math_Admin site under "My courses" in your Blackboard welcome page (after log in), then please contact the Postgraduate and Research Coordinator (see sidebar), who can enroll you and then add you to the postgraduate students group.
For other information, look in the university information for current postgraduates web page or try Bristol University Google search.
