Registering for units
Each academic year, students should take units normally totalling 120 credit points — 60 credit points in each teaching block. Students returning to enter their second, third or fourth years of an undergraduate mathematics degree should register their unit choices as detailed below. Please refer to the Guide to Unit Choices for a full explanation.
Initial registration for units by returning students
Initial choices of units should be made in consultation with tutors by 4th May 2012. Complete a Unit Choice Registration Form setting out your chosen options. (We will send a form to your home address but forms are also available from the School Office.) You must then take the completed form to your personal tutor to discuss your options. Ask your personal tutor to confirm their approval of your unit choices by signing the form. You must then return the signed form to the School Office/Reception by 4 May 2012.
Units with special rules
The Project and Mathematics–in–Schools units have special rules about when and how you can register. Please refer to the Project Handbook which will be available early next term and the Mathematics–in–Schools unit description, respectively.
Amending your registration
You will have an opportunity to amend your unit choices following the exam results in June 2012. To amend your units at this stage, you must see your personal tutor on 21/22 June 2012 to receive your 2011-12 transcript of marks and discuss your results and choice of units for 2012-13. If you wish to make a change to the options previously agreed on 4 May, please complete an Options Change Form available from the School Office and have it signed by your tutor. You must then return this form to the School Office by 29 June 2012.
Exceptional changes
At the start of each Teaching Block we allow one week for requests to change unit choices. No changes to unit choices will be allowed after this. Changes will not necessarily be approved, particularly if they result in timetable clashes. Changes will not be effective until they appear on StudentInfo — you must check. Students not registered for the correct units risk not being able to sit the examination.
Deadline for Exceptional TB1 Changes — 19 October 2012
The final deadline for exceptional changes to TB1 unit choices is Noon on Friday 19 October 2012. Please complete an Exceptional Unit Change Form available from the School Office, have it agreed and signed by your tutor and return it to the School Office.
Deadline for Exceptional TB2 Changes — 1 February 2013
The final deadline for exceptional changes to TB2 unit choices is Noon on Friday 1 February 2013. You cannot change or withdraw from a TB1 or ‘all year’ unit already taken or started. Please complete an Exceptional Unit Change Form available from Reception, have it agreed and signed by your tutor and return it to the School Office.
Registration for units from other Schools or Departments
The Mathematics School Office cannot register you for Open Units or units in another School — you have to register for the unit with the school offering the unit. Students should check with their personal tutor that they are happy with the unit choice and it meets the requirements of their degree.
Instructions for students NOT taking an undergraduate Mathematics degree
If you want to take a level C/4 unit in mathematics, please check with your home faculty, school or department to see whether you are allowed to do this as part of your programme and whether they have relevant procedures in place.
Students not on a mathematics programme are not normally allowed to take higher level mathematics units (levels I/5, H/6 or M/7). If there are no specific agreements for your programme, you will need to contact the Undergraduate Student Administrators (see sidebar for contact details).
