Microresonators
Microresonators are devices that trap light by total internal reflection,
and can be used to construct micron sized lasers. Here we combine the very
high Q-values (ie lifetimes) of a circular resonator with directivity
obtained by breaking the symmetry with a small or pointlike scatterer
to optimise the properties of such lasers. The equations can also
describe other circular resonators a little larger than the wavelength,
such as microwaves on scales of centimetres. One unexpected feature
of the solutions is that the optimal parameters are well described
in the ray approximation. Other relevant topics are
