Pretty Pictures
When deep in thought or lost in a world of confusion and tiredness, I like to have something interesting to look at. Being a generous sort I thought I would collate them here for the enjoyment of others.

Dali Atomicus - Philippe Halsman.
This photo of Salvador Dali and some flying cats took 28 attempts before Halsman was satisfied. A bad day for cats but a good day for surrealist photography.

Transverse Line - Kandinsky.
Very suitable when you're in the mood for a good stare.

Lighthouse at Two Lights - Hopper

Talking about Stars - Bolucevschi Vitali.
This is a photo taken by an amateur photographer which won the Environmental Photographer of the Year Award 2009.

Stringed Figure (Curlew) (1956) - Barbara Hepworth.

Dudley (1832) - Turner.
I saw this painting in an exhibition of Turner in the Gas Hall in Birmingham some years ago. Almost all of the other paintings by him there were of idylic landscapes so this one, depicting Dudley at the heart of industrialised Britain, stood out. As a reminder of the effect of human activity on the environment it seems an apt painting for our times as well.

The Petit Bras of the Seine at Argenteuil (1872) - Monet.
