Algebraic Topology: Administrative Stuff
Exercises
- There will be five homework assignments, four set before Easter
(approximately 7 Feb and each two weeks after) and one after
Easter. Deadlines for handing work in will be approximately two weeks
after the work is set, with more generous deadlines around Easter.
-
80 percent of the credit for the course will be based on homework
marks, the remaining 20 percent on presentations.
-
There will be a penalty for late homework. It will count as "on time"
if you hand it in by 5pm on the day it is due (this will usually be a
lecture day, and handing it in at the lecture is easiest, but if you
are going to hand it in later than this, please let me know when to
expect it.) If it is late, but by 7 days or less, then there will be a
penalty of 10 percent (of full marks, not of your mark) for each day
or part thereof that it is late (e.g., if you hand in a piece of work
between one and two days late, and get a mark of 75/100, this will be
reduced to 55/100). Work handed in more than 7 days late will not
receive any credit.
-
I encourage you to talk about the course in general amongst
yourselves, but you may not collaborate on the homework. As an
example, if there were a question asking you to find the universal
cover of a particular space, then talking to each other about the
definition of a universal cover in order to understand it is fine;
talking about the particular space and how to find its universal cover
is not. If in doubt about where the boundaries lie, then ask me.
-
As with exams, the marks are provisional until scaled and agreed
by the external examiners and board of examiners. I will hand back
marked work with an indication of the range of the mark ("first
class", "2.1", "2.2", etc.)
-
I need to keep copies of your work, which means I'll have to feed it
through the photocopier. This is why I've asked for it not to be
stapled and to be in dark ink on plain paper.
