Practical Information

Home Speakers and Timetable Practical Participants Photo Contact

This page has various important bits of information. It talks about: where you might like to stay, how much we'll ask you to pay, the conference dinner, the Wednesday excursion, how you might get to the university, and various places round here you might like to visit to eat and drink.

Registration is now closed - please accept our apologies. If you would like to come along you should send us an email, but we can no longer promise not to say no. Further apologies for the triple-negative.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided for invited speakers, but otherwise we ask that you sort out a place to stay yourself. The other end of This Link has a list of suggestions for places not too far from the university, from budget to luxury.

Conference Fee

The fee for the conference is £50 for the week. This will go towards the cost of lunch and refreshments. There is no fee for invited speakers or for postgraduate students. Money will be collected at the conference itself, so please do not send us anything before then.

Directions

Here is a link to a PDF with a map and some suggestions for how to get to the University. Note that if you are coming by train, the station you want is Bristol Temple Meads. The PDF also shows the location of the SS Great Britain, where the conference dinner will happen on Tuesday the 25th.

Directions and Local Map

Conference Dinner

The conference dinner will take place in the first class dining saloon of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's 1843 Steamship The SS Great Britain.

The meal will be on the evening of Tuesday 25th of September. The ship will be open to all participants for exploration all evening, so if you like, you can do a bit of tourism as well. The dinner will cost £30 (waived for invited speakers). The SSGB will cater to special dietary requirements, and if you have any then please let us know as soon as possible.

Food and Drink

On the off-chance you would like to check out the local restaurants or pubs in Bristol, This Link has some suggestions.

Wednesday Excursion

We will take Wednesday afternoon off to get some fresh air. We have booked a boat to take us on a little cruise along the river to Beese's Tea Gardens, where we can get some tea and stretch our legs. The boat will leave at 3pm from the town centre and will be back by 6pm. There is no charge if you would like to come along, but space on the boat is limited to 50, so please let us know if you are interested. Spaces will be allotted on a first come first serve basis.

What with dinner on the SS Great Britain and a river cruise, you'd think we were completely obsessed with boats or something! We are. If you would rather go exploring, there are plenty of fun things to do round here. Here are some quick suggestions:

Bristol has a decent zoo within walking distance of the university.

The handsome town of Bath can be reached in 10 minutes by train.

If the weather is nice, you could spend the afternoon wandering around in Leigh Woods, just across the suspension bridge.

There are plenty of museums and art galleries to explore nearby.

Past Deadlines

The deadline has now passed for registration, requests for financial support and for submission of abstracts of contributed talks. Sorry about this.

Anything else?

If you are worried there's something we're not telling you, it's probably just that we forgot to mention it. Let us know and if appropriate we'll add the information to this page.
