Welcome to the reincarnated homepage of John MacQuarrie. If I understand the concept of reincarnation - and I do - then the last incarnation must have been pretty good, because this one is amazing! That's me to your real left looking stage right at a deer.
I don't hunt deer. I'm a maths postdoc at Bristol University, where I do what I call (to be perverse rather than helpful) "topological algebra". It's some kind of representation theory really.
I've not long finished a PhD at Manchester University under the supervision of Peter Symonds, who to my knowledge also doesn't hunt deer.
I'm Scottish, from Glasgow, and when it's convenient I'm half Irish. Not wanting to retrospectively break from the theme of my life, I did maths for my undergrad at St Andrews University.
Other parts of this site can be reached using the tabs to your real left. You are more than welcome to click them, but if you'd rather guess what the URLs are going to be I'd honestly not want to stop you even if I could which I can't luckily for you.
Oh, and if you stumbled onto this page looking for the John MacQuarrie that knows about God and has met the (previous) Pope (!), I guess it's John MacQuarrie Sr you're after. He didn't have a website, being more an electric-typewriter sort of guy.
I don't have dreadlocks any more, but nor do I have recent photos and plus the deer is cool.
CMRT: Jeremy Rickard and I are organising an amazing conference. It's on the last week of September 2012 here at Bristol and it's called "Categorical Methods in Representation Theory". It'll last a week and have three amazing short-courses and be amazing. Check it out!
