Matthew Arnold

I am a third year Statistics PhD student in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Bristol. My supervisors are Peter Green and David Leslie.

I graduated in 2010 with an MMath from Grey College, Durham University. My final year project was a collaboration with Sustrans in which we analysed data collected from automatic cycle counters located across the National Cycle Network in the United Kingdom.

Research

I am studying the application of topological methods to Statistics. In particular, I am investigating "persistent homology", which generates "barcodes" in order to qualitatively describe point cloud data, using ideas close to those in single-linkage hierarchical clustering.

Talks

Topological Data Analysis, RSC 2012, July 2012

Statistical aspects of persistent homology, ATMCS5, July 2012

Bad charts, 2 minute talks, May 2012

Topological methods in Statistics, MINGLE 2011, October 2011

Tutorials

2012/13: I took over two groups for TB2. Both groups cover Linear Algebra and Geometry, Probability, and Statistics. The first group is in PC6, 2pm, Mondays. The second group is in RFG 2.2, 3pm, Mondays.

2011/12: I gave tutorials to two groups, each of them covering Linear Algebra and Geometry, Probability, and Statistics.

I'd probably prefer it if you emailed me. My email address is matthew.arnold at bristol dot ac dot uk

If you really want to see me in person, then my office is 4.2 in the main Maths building. This means I share an office with Will Havercroft. Luckily, he hasn't wanted to kick me out, yet. If you want directions, try a picture of Office 4.2 (from Bing).
