Burwalls

An outstanding example of Victorian architecture, Burwalls stands in its own woodland near the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and boasts a fine example of how the University carefully integrates the old with the new - an original oak panelled dining room sits comfortably alongside a fully equipped purpose-built lecture theatre.

Here is a map for Burwalls and for the Rodney Hotel in Clifton (map).

Travelling to Bristol

  • By air

    • Bristol airport is only nine miles from the city centre. A taxi from the airport to Clifton (Burwalls and the hotel) costs about 15 UK pounds.
    • Heathrow airport, 10 miles to the west of London, is the closest of the London airports to Bristol. The easiest way to Bristol is by coach, number 200, 201 or 202: a 2 hour journey. The coach arrives at Bristol Bus and Coach Station. The return fare is about 28 UK pounds for adults, and a taxi ride to Clifton a further 6 UK pounds. Travelling by train is a little more involved (and much more expensive) journey, and involves taking the "Heathrow Express" into London Paddington station, and changing train for Bristol Temple Meads. (See below.)
    • Gatwick airport also has a direct coach service to Bristol, number 200 or 201, taking about 3.5 hours, leaving approximately once every 1.5 hours. The return fare is about 33.50 UK pounds per adult. Do check the times on the web. (See address below.) By train, it's a 3 hour journey, changing train at Reading.
    • Travelling from the majority of other UK airports is most easily achieved by train or bus, see below.

  • By train

The most convenient train station for Clifton (where the hotel and Burwalls are located) is the main station in the centre of Bristol, Bristol Temple Meads. (Note that Bristol has a second main line station, Bristol Parkway, but this is a long way from the city centre, so is best avoided). Trains from London leave London Paddington station every half hour during the day. Bristol Temple Meads is also served by direct trains from most other major cities in the UK. Train timetables are available from Railtrack's website and fares from thetrainline (registration necessary for the latter).

  • By coach

Coaches arrive at the Bristol Bus & Coach Station on Marlborough Street. More information on coach travel, including times and fares, is available from the National Express website.

  • From Bristol Temple Meads or the Bristol Bus & Coach Station

There are taxi ranks at both Bristol Temple Meads and the Bristol Bus & Coach Station, from where you can take a taxi onwards to Clifton for about 6 UK pounds.
