Excursion

On Saturday 21st, weather permitting, there will be an excursion to Offa's dike in Wales. A bus will pick people up at 9am outside the physics department on Tyndall's Avenue (number 33 on the Bristol University precinct map).

The bus will drop us off in Chepstow, where we can explore Chepstow Castle, one of the oldest Norman fortifications in Britain. We will then walk along Offa's dike and the Wye valley to Tintern Abbey, the quintessential monastic ruin (see Turner's watercolours). The walk itself is 6-7 miles, and should take 2-3 hours. (In the walk description, it roughly begins at point number 4 and goes to the point where "A path comes up from Tintern...". The map shows the route highlighted in yellow, at a scale of 1km per grid square with contours in metres.) We should be in Tintern by lunchtime, where there is a nice pub. The bus will pick us up mid-afternoon from Tintern, and drop us back in Bristol in time to exchange hiking boots for tuxedo and go to the workshop dinner. The tuxedo was a joke...

Stay-at-homes will be still be able to use the conference rooms and computing facilities in the maths department, and coffee/tea will still be provided. The come-alongs will get to go on a very pretty walk, and go to the pub. You're free to decide to do whichever your prefer. Just make sure you make the "right" decision (it should be obvious...!)

Arrival

The maths department is building number 29 on the Bristol University precinct map.

For anyone interested in meeting for dinner on Thursday evening (19th April), we will be in the Zerodegrees brewery pub from 7pm.

The 49th British Applied Mathematics Colloquium is taking place in Bristol immediately before the QAP workshop, and the programme for Thursday afternoon includes a session on quantum information theory. If you are arriving early enough, you may find it interesting to attend. It is being held in the Will's Memorial building (number 26 on the Bristol University precinct map.)

Transport

Bristol is easy to reach by road, rail and air; details are available at the University of Bristol directions page. There are direct international flights to Bristol Airport . Participants arriving by train should normally aim for Bristol Temple Meads station.

Accommodation

Conference attendees are requested to book their accommodation by contacting a hotel directly. The following hotels have a reduced rate for visitors to the University of Bristol. Please state that you are visiting the Bristol University Mathematics Department when you make the booking. (Prices listed here were accurate when this information was added to the web site, but you should confirm the actual price with the hotel when you make the booking.)

Registration

To register your interest please email toby.cubitt@bristol.ac.uk. Registration closes on the 25th March. (At midnight GMT, for those of you who leave these things to the last minute - but please don't!)

If you are interested in presenting your work at the conference, you should also supply a title and brief abstract when you register. A final decision on the number and format of talks and presentations will be taken soon after the registration deadline.

Everyone who registers before the deadline will be welcome to attend. Members of groups involved in the QAP network can reclaim expenses directly via their own university or institute. Those not involved in QAP are also welcome to apply, but will have to arrange their own financial support.
