MINGLE 2010 will be the second installment in the MINGLE conference series, following on from an exceptionally successful 2009 event. This year will attempt to replicate the success of the last, while improving the conference further still.
The Maths students of the University of Bristol are spread across several buildings. Apparently there are eight or nine different buildings housing us students, with most of us crammed into either St Michael's Hill, Howard House, or the main Maths building. Because of this, meeting fellow maths students isn't always easy. Seminars and the such like let one at least meet some of the people in one's group, be that Pure, Applied, or Statistics. But the chances of a Pure and Applied mathematician meeting up are – as a Statistician would tell them – vanishingly small. Or at least the Statistician would tell them that if he ever bumped into either of them.
The MINGLE conference strives to change all this. A series of twenty minute talks by students from all areas of the department will be liberally scattered across the day. Interspersed with these will be opportunities to mull over various poster presentations and chat with their creators, not to mention free food and drink - both lunch and dinner! Not only will you get to see what research is actually being done by students in the other groups, you will also get a rare opportunity to discuss ideas and make friends with these students.
