The Maths students of the University of Bristol are spread across several buildings. These buildings have a name, and their name is Legion. Apparently there are eight or nine different buildings housing us students, with most of us crammed into either St Michael's Hill, Howard House, or the main Maths building. Because of this, meeting fellow maths students isn't always easy. Seminars and the such like let one at least meet some of the people in one's group, be that Pure, Applied, or Statistics. But the chances of a Pure and Applied mathematician meeting up are – as a Statistician would tell them – vanishingly small. Or at least the Statistician would tell them that if he ever bumped into either of them.

Mingle 2009 was a little attempt to overcome this problem and get all the Maths postgraduates at Bristol, well, mingling. It took place on October 7th at the Burwalls centre, courtesy of Roberts funding. And we think it was rather successful. Talks and posters were presented, coffee was drunk, yummy food was eaten, and there was even a competition with a prize and everything.

Ginormous thanks go out to the talkers and posterers, to the staff at Burwalls, to Guy Nason for his tear-inspiring opening speech, to anyone who bought me a pint at the pub afterwards, and of course to everyone who showed up and made the day work.

Photos from the day are available here or on Facebook, and if you're thinking of organising Mingle 2010 then the 2009 organisers' contact details are still kicking around. Finally, if you want to see the old Mingle website then click here.
